The balance between oil-carrying velocity, acceptable pressure drop, and system capacity.
Pressure drop in the suction and liquid lines costs capacity and efficiency. But reducing it by oversizing pipe kills oil return. The design balances all three.
Where it matters
- Suction line pressure drop costs capacity directly
- Liquid line pressure drop can cause flash gas
- Filter driers and restrictions add drop
