Compressor Valves

Advanced

Valve failure changes pumping capacity and discharge temperature. Understand what the valves do and how their failure shows up.

Compressor valves control the intake and discharge of refrigerant gas. A leaking or broken valve changes how the compressor pumps and what it reads.

Suction and discharge valves

A leaking discharge valve lets high-pressure gas back into the cylinder, reducing capacity and raising discharge temperature. A leaking suction valve reduces pumping efficiency. Both show as equalising pressures and low amps under load.

Diagnosis at a glance

Symptoms of failure

  • •Reduced capacity
  • •High discharge temperature
  • •Equalising pressures
  • •Low amps under load

Measurements to take

  • •Pump-down test
  • •Discharge temperature
  • •Pressures and amps
